Church Planting & Equipping

Once students have completed their studies at the Bible School, a number of them go out into the surrounding villages to serve as the local pastor.    For some it might mean returning to their home church, but for others it might mean starting a new work from scratch where there has not previously been a Christian witness.

All the village pastors need our prayers and support as they often work under difficult circumstances.    They and their families often live in poor and cramped conditions, sometimes with only an outside tap or well, and many have to take on secular work to provide for their needs, and consequently some survive on very little sleep.  Some pastors drive vehicles distributing books to local schools, and another installs windows.  In spite of these pressures the village pastors are very dedicated and committed to reaching the local people with the gospel - not always easy when they are viewed with suspicion or the local priest discourages people from attending an evangelical church. However in many villages congregations are growing and buildings are being extended, or new ones erected, often by the members themselves.

Over the years  great progress has been made from handfuls of people meeting in dilapidated buildings, to good numbers meeting in a really lovely sanctuary which  is a testimony to the peoples commitment and God’s faithfulness.

Many of the churches are experiencing conversions, with several people coming forward for baptism by immersion, and others have a good work among children and young people, as often the church is the only place where there is any social activity, and sport is a really effective way of getting alongside the younger age group. In the summer many of the churches hold children’s camps which attract large numbers, while others have good relationships with their local schools, and the pastors are welcomed in to share the gospel with the students.

Because villages in Ukraine are separated by large distances pastors in particular have little opportunity to share with other pastors, and can sometimes feel very isolated.    Please pray for all our village pastors, and if the Lord lays it on your heart, why not ask for the name of a village church and pastor whom you could take a particular interest in. Twinning is a real blessing to many and is really appreciated by our Ukrainian friends and it doesn’t have to involve financial support , but contact through e-mails or a letter now and then to let them know that they are prayed for and appreciated.

If this is something you or your church would like to be involved in, please contact the Hope Now office in Southampton, or telephone Valerie Reddaway, our head of department on 01202 696085.

Kolyadkyi in Koochkivka

Recently, our church buried Olga. She was only 17 but she died of cancer. When I heard about it I thought, God has left me on the Earth because He still wants me to do something for Him.
