When Alina Zalygina was two a smoking accident in the home caused a house fire in which she was severely burned. It was, as a direct result of this accident coming to the attention of Dr Peter Johnston, that Hope Now donated to the Cherkassy Regional Hospital state of the art equipment for the burns unit. Subsequently, when Alina’s mother lost her parental rights she came into the Hope Now foster care programme.
Alina is now in her fourth form at school, where her studies are improving, especially in English. She loves to sing with her sister Anya for all the school celebrations. Recently, she was the subject of a T.V. documentary, which has been shown several times with, sadly, an unsettling effect upon the child. Natasha, her foster-mum took her to the Kyiv Institute to see what might be done about the extensive scarring to her face and body. The professor has said that something can be done. It will mean wearing a special device for two months. She will need five of these devices for her face and hands but will not attempt anything for the legs and torso yet. If the devices are installed it will mean going to Kyiv every week for hydro treatment. Hope Now will seek to cover the £3,500 cost of this and the private school lessons she will need for at least one semester. Meanwhile, Natasha and Vitaliy have been trying to improve the house for the several children in their care against a backdrop of constant inspections due to an anonymous letter from a hostile neighbour. The children are well cared for but all need our prayers with this added intrusion into their normal lives.
