Having received an urgent request from local internats for children’s clothes our Ukraine office sprang into action. Local churches and other Christian organisations were contacted and for two weeks Misha was kept busy collecting clothes from around the area, to add to those taken from the UK. Word soon spread and requests also came in from families with several children and disadvantaged families.
Having sorted the clothes they were repacked and taken firstly to Mykhailivka internat where Vasily the director said how grateful he was, and that he had not seen clothes of such good quality before. From there the group drove on to Shpola internat where it had begun to snow in the late afternoon. There are 43 orphans and 140 children from disadvantaged families there. To add to the excitement there was a power cut which meant the children had to write their thank you notes and best wishes to the churches by the light of candles and mobile phones.
Childrens books telling of the life of Jesus were also handed out, and 82 children promised to read them over the Christmas period. There were many happy faces and an atmosphere of real joy but the group had to leave as the snow was still falling and it was becoming very dark. As they left the village a large tree was seen to be blocking the road, fallen with the
weight of snow on its branches. The ever resourceful Misha took some straps from the bus and having attached them to the tree was able to pull it clear. The rest of the journey was uneventful and many children and their families had benefited from those who care both in Ukraine and the UK.
