Colin Garnett preaching to the
women at Uman Prison
Following my release from prison in 1993 I rested in a quiet conviction that The Lord wanted me to rest in Him for 2 years before I would be taken to the next stage of my development, and sure enough, in 1995 I was approached by a guy who asked me: “Do you know Vic Jackopson”? “Nope”, said I. He went on to challenge me, “Vic heads up Hope Now, he is taking a missionary team to Prison 62 in Ukraine this year, why don’t you contact him”? The next day I went to one of my Elders and told him: “I’m going to Ukraine”, and then I wrote to Vic. Three trips to Ukraine later in 1997, I was very politely told by Vic: “Colin there are some rough edges which need to come off if you are ever to reach the up-n-outs. I think you should consider going to Bible College”. With no family wealth to fall back on and zero pounds in the bank, I thought, ‘I’m in, but we are going to need a miracle’. That year, Hope Now undertook a sponsorship programme which took me from my comfort zone to a 4-year BA Degree course at Moorlands College. The (our) plan was for me to head up the Hope Now Prison Department as an Evangelist after college. During a College placement I went to visit the Pollsmoor Prison Ministry and as I entered the prison I felt a deep stir within me that this was not The Lord’s heart for me. Emotionally I felt trapped, after all that had been done in raising support. Thousands of pounds had been poured in to educate me, and some wonderful friendships had developed between us, so now I felt as if I was about to betray my friends. I rang Moorlands College from South Africa and told them “I cannot do this prison thing”. They left me in no doubt; the placement had been agreed, the documentation was in place in line with the BA Degree, it could not be changed! But while there I went to visit a dirty, very smelly, little hovel in a drug infested area of Cape Town, which was occupied by 10 flea ridden outcasts of society. As I looked into that den, I remember thinking; ‘Lord, I don’t want to go in there’, and then thinking; ‘which is probably how The Holy Spirit felt just before He came I into my heart’ … so in I went. “Somehow”, Moorlands supported my change from Pollsmoor Prison to Beth Rapha drug rehab, which was great. However, working with addicts was not part of the plan for Hope Now. Where confusion tried to creep in, Grace prevailed! Hope Now agreed to release me after college to allow me to return to South Africa – and I believe it is right there that Hope Now made the difference. You were prepared to sponsor me without desire to control me. The call of God was more important to you than that which would only be fair after all you had done. The arrest of the lost and the implantation of The Good News of Jesus Christ into broken hearts proved more rewarding to you than ‘our’ plan for which we had all sincerely striven. During my year away from Hope Now, my sponsoring Church, in Cape Town, insisted on controlling how we ran the ministry and it nearly died and my relationship with them was constantly tense. Hope Now made the difference for me and showed me how to respond.

The Beth Rapha Ministry survived and is still running. It has given birth to two other Addiction Treatment Facilities in South Africa and an Addiction Referral Agency. It became the Blue Print for The Bethesda Recovery Homes, where Deanna, my wife, and I now take both the down and the up-n-outs and minister in Grace and in Truth. Our team know that if they should ever want to minister elsewhere, they would have our complete support, as long as Jesus, The Son of God is lifted up. Hundreds of families are back together as a result of Hope Now’s efforts into my life. The ministry of The Bethesda Recovery Homes spreads by the month into townships and into palaces. I had to seek God about not baptising people because I would have spent too much time in the river and would be all dimply by now. Now when we see people converted we introduce them to the nearest Church suitable for them on their return home. Hope Now? Did it make a difference? No … Hope Now made THE difference. Thank you, from the bottom of hundreds of hearts of hundreds of mums and dads and brothers and sisters and sons and daughters, who once were lost but now are safe, were blind but now see The Way. ) 2 Corinthians 5:18.
