Family sponsorship is designed to help families to stay together. It has been known for the State to split up poor families and send some of the children to internats. The money will not always be given directly to the families. In certain cases food and clothing will be provided. In most cases it will be possible to provide the sponsor with a photograph of the family. Much care is taken to ensure that families do not develop long-term dependency. Every six months each family is reviewed. Following the review Hope Now may recommend to the sponsor a change of family. Sponsors are dicouraged from corresponding with the families they sponsor.
More than half of all orphans experience homelessness and as many as 10% of the 69,000 registered orphans are likely to commit suicide unless they are better prepared for independent living.
